On this day, 20 July 2001, Carlo Giuliani, a 23-year-old Italian history student and left-wing activist, was killed in Genoa by Caribinieri - Italian military police - during protests against the G8 summit. 200,000 people, many of them from elsewhere in Italy and around the world, had travelled to the city to join protests against the meeting of the governments of the world's eighth most powerful economies as part of a global movement against wealth inequality, globalisation and capitalism.
