Young trade unionists from South Asia extend solidarity to Sri Lankan workers!

Youth Trade Union leaders affiliated to Industrial Global Union and from 25 Union federations across India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka, released a joint statement yesterday the 15th of June, 2022, extending their solidarity to Sri Lankan workers during this time of crisis.

These Youth Trade Union leaders have demanded that Brands and local suppliers should continue to invest in Sri Lanka and ensure young Sri Lankan workers are ensured jobs to fight through the economic crisis. The statement calls for international Brands not to engage in the practice of cancelling orders in Sri Lanka, similar to what was done during the COVID-19 pandemic, causing massive unemployment and wage theft. The signatories have also demanded that local suppliers do not relocate their production bases at this time, which will lead to unemployment in Sri Lanka.
