‘Aragala Bhoomiya’
When the people entered the battlefield (Arakala Bhoomiya), they asked, “Abi Payyatta?” That hears a voice from the loudspeaker. “Ne … ne …” those around shout. (“Are we scared?” “No no …”)
The popular battlefield around the Presidential Secretariat and in the Galle Face Stadium is an important form of political protest. Their historical mistake is that the Rajapaksa company underestimated it.
The vast majority of those there are the younger generation. It was the moral outrage that their future had been looted that drove them. It is the voice of rebellion that refuses to be subdued.
Some underestimated its political significance. However, it gradually grew into an accumulation of total opposition from the people of the country. It began to receive more and more attention from the media and the international community.
It has become a meeting place for the hearts and minds of the people of the country. Various developments began to unfold on this battlefield.
Scenes that evoke the diversity of Sri Lankans can be seen here. Some sought to portray the field as being left-wing only. But, the reality is different than that. There were adults, children, right wingers, leftists, men, women, liberals, trade unions, businessmen, Sinhalese, Tamils, Muslims, upcountry Tamils, members of various political parties, clergy, private sector, social media celebrities, artists and many more. Many more came and went.
It is true that all the university students and left-wing youth there were strong.
Without them, it would have been difficult to maintain the stability-sustainability-continuity of the battlefield. Their dedicated contribution cannot be underestimated.
I emphasize this by emphasizing how difficult it is to maintain a sense of struggle in such a people’s struggle, as someone who has experienced it.
Its organizers have been systematically devising various strategies to continue to attract people. Various innovation efforts were frequently made. A kind of ‘celebratory mood’ was maintained in order to retain the people. Some considered this to be just fun.
Still others saw it as an instrument of international power. Some said they were proxies – agents of local political parties. This may be partially true. But, exaggerations abound.
All parties will be present in the spontaneous struggle in which many parties will come together.
But the basic need is to maintain it without deviating from its central vision. They took care of it.
Within a month, it had taken shape as the conscience of the nation as a whole. To the people it was seen as an accumulation of a sense of liberation.
On the other hand, it was seen by the authorities as harassment and interference. They had seen the moment to dissolve it.
However, the people’s battlefield was non-violent – peaceful and persistent. That is the main secret of its success. This was a major challenge for the government and the Rajapaksa family. The dual state of being able to dissolve and not being able to dissolve.
Another important aspect was that the vision of the international community was to stand on this people’s battlefield. The rulers were compelled to read the repression as they had to deal with the West and international organizations such as the IMF and the World Bank.
They were squeezing their hands in no other way and were stumbling in a confused state of mind.
On the other hand, this people’s battlefield was a great impetus for the masses throughout the island. Its impact-echo could be felt in various parts of the country.
The entire country came to a standstill due to the nationwide hurdle on May 06. The Rajapakse family was well aware that if the civil disobedience movement grew and stabilized, the state apparatus would be paralyzed.
The moment had seen this to be dissolved somehow- to be wiped out.
Alas!
They chose the old-fashioned technique that was very fruitful. They also hired mercenaries and tried to play political drama. They dreamed that they could beat it and still lick the chair of power.
That’s why the wasp was stoned to death. They put their hand on what should not be touched. It has become a ‘boomerang’ and has begun to strike back at the aviators themselves.
Effect: Nadee burned about overnight. The burning of the Rajapaksa family home ‘Medamulana Valavva’ and the demolition of the DA Rajapaksa memorial have become a historical symbol.
Those in power make the same mistake over and over again. It is that they do not learn a single lesson from history. They confuse themselves and confuse others.
